Check on Your Mate:

Art & Advocacy for Youth Mental Health

Mental wellness isn't a luxury; it's a necessity, especially for Cleveland’s youth. "Check on Your Mate," hosted by Steven Kwan and For Art’s Sake at the historic League Park, was a powerful reminder of that truth. On June 23rd, the Baseball Heritage Museum transformed into a vibrant space for connection, healing, and expression.

"Check on Your Mate" was more than an event, it marked the start of an ongoing commitment. Driven by community support, continued donations, and intentional partnerships, this initiative continues to expand mental health and chess programs within Cleveland’s underserved schools, inspiring lasting change for our youth.

Students involved in Cleveland’s school-based mental health programs are twice as likely to seek help when facing emotional challenges, reinforcing the importance of early intervention and community support.

The event featured an inspiring Celebrity Chess Tournament, bringing together CMSD students and professional athletes from the Cleveland Guardians, Cavaliers, and Browns. Young chess enthusiasts also competed in the K–12 Open Tournament, highlighting strategy and sportsmanship in a welcoming community environment.

Visitors explored a deeply reflective Wellness Art Exhibit by artist Ben Mirka, sparking meaningful conversations around mental health. Storytelling in the Park offered a safe space for open dialogue about resilience, cultural heritage, and emotional well-being, complemented by expert wellness support from Mend Psychiatry’s Veronica Morris.

Guests enjoyed delicious local eats provided by Cilantro Taqueria and Mason’s Creamery while supporting important causes through a nonprofit auction featuring ILTHY merchandise. Proceeds directly benefited local nonprofits like ASIA, CMSD, Progress with Chess, and Fatima Family Center.
